The Best Times to Book a Bass Fishing Trip in New York State

Updated: Mar 11

Are you looking for the perfect time to book a bass guide trip in New York State? Here’s your complete guide to planning the ultimate fishing experience.

First, it’s important to know that New York has a regulated bass season, unlike some other states, you can’t fish year-round. This seasonal structure is part of what makes New York bass fishing world-class.

Canadian Pre-Season on the St. Lawrence River

The season kicks off with the Canadian pre-season on the St. Lawrence River. Ontario opens its side of the river for catch-and-release fishing, typically from April 10 to May 10. This is hands-down the best time to fish the St. Lawrence, with daily 5-fish limits often totaling 30 pounds or more (averaging around 6 pounds per fish). This is a limited window, and anglers looking for trophy bass won’t want to miss it. This is the best window for true giants, potentially 7-pound smallmouth.

Early Season on Cayuga Lake

Once the Canadian pre-season ends, the action moves to Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region from May 10 to June 1. This is another phenomenal window, with largemouth bass 5-fish limits around 30 pounds. If you enjoy throwing giant 8–10" baits on heavy tackle, this is the experience for you.

U.S. St. Lawrence Opening Week

The U.S. side of the St. Lawrence opens on June 14, offering an excellent opportunity for anglers of all skill levels. Limits during this time generally range from 25–28 pounds, making it a fun, productive, and beginner-friendly period.

Summer Fishing

From July through early September, both Cayuga Lake and the St. Lawrence River provide consistent fishing, with daily limits around 20–25 pounds. Summer fishing is reliable, fun, and perfect for longer trips with family or friends.

Fall on the St. Lawrence

As fall sets in, the St. Lawrence bite heats up again. From October into early November, limits climb, often topping 28–32 pounds as bass bulk up for winter. Weather can be challenging with early storms, cold fronts, and wind, but a calm day or braving the elements can reward you with huge numbers and size. This period is my second-best time to fish the St. Lawrence.
